Location: Aviation Heritage Park located at the corner of Three Springs Road and Smallhouse Road at Basil Griffin Park.
Track: Layout based on the National Corvette Museum’s Motorsports Park “LeMans Circuit.” It is a 1,000 foot course with tight turns, long straights, and over and under airgates. Click for Course Map.
Green Zone Course: Free flight area away from course for unlimited, fun flying. Part of registration.
Participants: First Person View (FPV) and Line of Sight (LOS) UAV pilots. Click for Participation Rules.
Fee Structure: Spectators – Free (Must remain clear of pilots and out of Green Zone); UAV Pilot Registration– $10 (One-time fee. Full day access to Green Zone); Track Use: $10 / 5-minute track session / pilot. Sessions can be solo or head-to-head with as many as four drones.
Prizes: Mall gift cards- FPV pilot with most lap completions in a single session- first and second place.
Other Park Events: Open Cockpits 10 am – 2 pm. Docents will be on hand to provide information. Food vendors- Rapid Rick, Chaney’s Ice Cream and a Barbecue restaurant will also be on hand.
Park Prizes: Aviation Heritage Park will have four Park Hopper passes from Disney World in Orlando to raffle the day of the Drone Dash to participants and park visitors.
Drone Dash/Open Cockpits
The DASH will feature a 1,000-foot-long course with tight turns, long straights and over and under airgates for both First Person View (FPV) and Line of Sight (LOS) pilots. The layout is based on the National Corvette Museum’s Motorsports Park “LeMans Circuit.” Click the course thumbnail for a larger view. UAV pilots are encouraged to bring “anything with rotors” of any size to test their skills.
Registration will open at 8 am with racing to start at 9 am and will continue through the day until 5 pm. Anyone wishing to use a drone on Aviation Heritage Park property must register.
Track time will be set up in 5-minute sessions and can be can be run by pilots solo, or raced “Head-to-Head” with friends with as many as four drones at the same time. Pilots may register for multiple runs. Spotters are not required, but may be used at the pilot’s discretion. Altitude restrictions will be enforced. For simplicity, we will keep flight at treetop level. Pre-registration forms are available for download by clicking this link. Participant rules are available here. Pre-registrants have first access to time slot assignments. After all time slots are filled, registration will be closed.
This event is free for spectators. For UAV operators, the registration fee is $10. Pilots can buy blocks of time on the track for $10 per block. All proceeds from the DASH will further AHP’s restoration and education efforts.
During the DASH, Aviation Heritage Park will also feature a free “Open Cockpit Day” so visitors can have a rare opportunity to see the inside of the beautifully restored warbirds. The cockpits will be open from 10 am to 2 pm. Docents will be on hand to provide information.
